TITLE:                          Director of Nursing – Center Wide

CLASSIFICATION:        Clinical Management III

SALARY RANGE:         $66,349 - $100,958

SUPERVISOR:              Clinical Director


This is a responsible professional position that manages and supervises the Authority’s Nursing Programs.



Direct and supervise the operation, management and maintenance of the Authority’s Nursing program.

Responsible for development of clinical and program policies as pertains to the Nursing Programs.

Responsible for the recruitment and interviewing for all nursing positions within the Authority.

Responsible for the overall supervision of all nurses within the Authority.

Responsible for the overall supervision of the Nurse Delegation Program.

Responsible for providing back-up coverage of the Nurse Delegation Program when required.

Responsible for overseeing the Authority’s Infection Control program.

Ensure MAC II certification classes are conducted on an as needed basis.

Recommend medical, psychological and psychiatric examinations for consumers as needed and assure medical maintenance of consumers on an ongoing basis.

Maintain good working relationships with other community agencies.

Serve on the Performance Improvement and Human Rights Committees.

Provide linkage between Residential Treatment Services and the Outpatient Programs

Assist with transport of consumers from one location to another.

Responsible for ensuring all nursing staff are current with required training and licensing.

Ensure compliance with the State Department of Mental Health certification requirements.

Supervise the Crisis Residential Program Directors.

Be knowledgeable of Medicaid and Medicare Standards.

Maintain on-going awareness of budgetary matters and coordinate with the Chief Operations Officer in managing these matters on a timely basis.

Assist programs under supervision by providing or obtaining staff coverage.

Assure coverage of RN staff in all programs.

Complete annual report and other reports as indicated to the Alabama Department of Mental Health for the Alabama Board of Nursing and other reports required by the Authority.

Assist psychiatrists and/or CRNP’S with utilization of the Order Connect System as needed.

Monitor all programs for medication errors and submit and review medication error reports internally to the Performance Improvement Director and externally to the Department of Mental Health as required.

Engage in community services and consultation with other groups and agencies as may be periodically assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.



Ability to assume responsibility for professional and administrative functions of all MAMHA nursing programs.

Considerable knowledge of crisis intervention and the problems of the seriously mentally ill.

Considerable knowledge of psychotropic drugs concerning their applied use, desirable and undesirable effects.

Ability to maintain and prepare comprehensive reports on activities.

Knowledge of the principles of administration management and personnel supervision.

In depth knowledge of Nurse Delegation Program.






Graduation from a recognized college or university with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in nursing.  A Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.  Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama with experience in psychiatric nursing and decision-making responsibilities plus five years supervised clinical experience in a mental health setting. Administrative experience required.

Meet requirements of Medicaid for approved Medicaid Provider status.

MAS Certified or become MAS Certified within two months of assuming the position.

Hold a Driver’s License valid in the State of Alabama and maintain a driving record which is acceptable to the Authority’s insurance carrier. Must maintain personal Automobile Liability insurance and provide renewed copies to Human Resources. Must hold and maintain current Red Cross First Aid and CPR Training Certificates.
