SALARY RANGE: $55,521- $84,482
 
SUPERVISOR: Chief Financial Officer
 
DEFINITION:
 
This position is responsible for performing and coordinating advanced accounting functions while providing day to day guidance, oversight, and support to accounting and fiscal support staff. The Senior Accountant assists the Chief Financial Officer in maintaining fiscal integrity, ensuring the accuracy of financial records, supporting financial reporting and audit activities, monitoring compliance with established financial procedures, and promoting consistent accounting practices across programs.
 
The Senior Accountant serves as a senior resource within Fiscal Affairs and exercises independent judgment in performing complex accounting functions, resolving routine financial discrepancies, and identifying significant accounting, compliance, or internal control matters requiring the attention of the Chief Financial Officer.
 
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
 
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Responsibilities
Responsible for advanced accounting functions involving accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, inventory, cash, fixed assets, and other financial accounts.
Prepare, review, and record entries to the general ledger system.
Prepare and review reconciliations of general ledger accounts, bank statements, and other financial accounts.
Research and resolve account discrepancies, reconciling items, and unusual financial transactions.
Assist with month end and year end closing activities, including preparation of accruals, adjustments, reclassifications, and supporting schedules.
Assist with contract billing and related financial reporting.
Analyze income, expenses, budget activity, and account variances as required.
Prepare and assist with internal and external financial reporting.
Assist with maintaining accurate financial records and appropriate supporting documentation.
Create and maintain worksheets, schedules, and reports used for financial analysis and reporting.
 
Financial Reporting, Budget, and Audit Support
Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Prepare financial schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for management review.
Assist the Chief Financial Officer with annual budget preparation, financial projections, and budget monitoring.
Monitor financial activity and identify significant variances or discrepancies requiring review.
Assist with internal and external audits, governmental reviews, and other financial examinations.
Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation and assist with responding to auditor requests.
Assist with implementing corrective actions resulting from financial reviews or audit findings.
Assist with financial reporting associated with grants, contracts, and other funding sources.
 
Supervision and Fiscal Support
Provide day-to-day guidance, oversight, and technical support to Accountants, Accounting Clerks, and other fiscal support staff as assigned.
Review accounting documentation, reconciliations, and financial entries for accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
Assist in coordinating workload distribution and establishing daily priorities among accounting support staff.
Provide training and technical assistance regarding accounting procedures and financial documentation.
Assist with cross training accounting staff to promote continuity of fiscal operations.
Identify accounting, compliance, or operational concerns requiring escalation to the Chief Financial Officer.
 
Internal Controls and Compliance
Assist with maintaining effective internal controls over financial transactions and accounting processes.
Review accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
Ensure financial transactions and documentation comply with established fiscal policies, budget guidelines, accounting procedures, and applicable funding requirements.
Assist with developing, documenting, and maintaining departmental accounting procedures.
Maintain financial documentation in accordance with established record retention requirements.
Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards, contractual requirements, and federal and state financial requirements.
Procurement and Administrative Coordination
Assist with procurement coordination for supplies, furniture, equipment, and operational resources across programs in collaboration with Fiscal Affairs.
Ensure purchasing activities follow established fiscal policies, budget guidelines, and procurement procedures.
Provide support and guidance to Office Managers and other designated staff regarding procurement processes and financial documentation.
Review purchasing and financial documentation for accuracy, appropriate authorization, and compliance with established procedures.
Administrative and Operational Support
Assist in monitoring consumer financial receivables, including rent collections, to ensure appropriate documentation, reconciliation, and reporting.
Cross train on departmental duties to provide support and continuity as needed.
Assist with creating and maintaining departmental procedures, financial documentation, and internal accounting resources.
Serve as a resource to departments regarding established financial processes and documentation requirements.
Perform other fiscal duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
 
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and general financial management.
Thorough knowledge of general ledger accounting, account reconciliation, financial reporting, and internal controls.
 
Knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, financial analysis, and audit processes.
 
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and their application to organizational financial activities.
Knowledge in the use of computers, spreadsheets, databases, accounting software, and general office programs.
 
Ability to analyze financial information, identify discrepancies, and determine appropriate corrective action.
 
Ability to prepare accurate financial reports, reconciliations, schedules, and analyses.
Ability to interpret and apply financial policies, procedures, contracts, and funding requirements.
 
Ability to exercise independent judgment and recognize matters requiring escalation to the Chief Financial Officer.
 
Ability to provide guidance, technical assistance, and work direction to accounting and fiscal support staff.
 
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established financial and reporting deadlines.
 
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding financial, employee, consumer, and organizational information.
Ability to establish, develop, and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff, management, governmental agencies, auditors, vendors, and other community organizations.
 
Ability to readily learn and apply required procedures.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field with specific coursework and demonstrated competence in accounting, plus four years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience involving multiple facets of accounting procedures;
OR
Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, plus two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
Experience should include multiple accounting functions such as general ledger accounting, account reconciliation, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, auditing, grant or contract accounting, or financial analysis.
 
Experience providing guidance to accounting staff, reviewing accounting work, or serving in a lead or senior accounting capacity preferred.
Experience with governmental, nonprofit, healthcare, behavioral health, grant funded, or other regulated accounting systems preferred.
CPA, CMA, CGFM, or related professional accounting certification preferred.
